Akkermansia muciniphila is a type of human gut bacteria. Colonized in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and other animals, it can be found in the mucosal layer of the epithelial recess, as well as in the cecum. It is a gram-negative, strictly anaerobic, oval-shaped bacterium that does not exercise and does not form arms. It is a mucin-degrading bacterium belonging to the genus Akkermansia of Verrucomicrobiota.
