When the iron core is inserted into the energized solenoid, the core will be magnetized by the magnetic field of the energized solenoid. The magnetized core also becomes a magnet, and the superposition of the two magnetic fields greatly enhances the magnetism of the solenoid. In order to make the electromagnet more magnetic, the core is usually made into a hoof shape.
It is worth noting that the winding direction of the coil is opposite to the shoe core, one side is clockwise and the other side must be counterclockwise. When the coils are oriented in the same direction, the magnetization of the two coils on the core cancel each other out, making the core non-magnetic. The electromagnetic core is made of soft iron, not steel. Conversely, once magnetized, steel will remain magnetic for a long time and cannot be demagnetized, thus making its magnetic strength uncontrollable by current and thus losing the advantage of electromagnets.
