Isomalto-Oligosaccharide
Isomalto-Oligosaccharides (IMO) are short chain non-digestible carbohydrates naturally found in products such as soy sauce and honey. They are also prepared as food ingredients commercially from starch by microbial enzymatic transformation. IMO are primarily glucose oligomers with α-D-(1 → 6)-linkages and α-D-(1 → 4)-linkages, including among others isomaltose, panose, and other higher branched oligosaccharides.
Isomalto-Oligosaccharides are plant-based prebiotic carbohydrates that positively impact digestion, bowel movement quality and frequency, as well as beneficial bacteria in the gut. Although not calorie-free, IMOs contain fewer calories and more fiber than traditional sweeteners like table sugar. When consumed in moderation as a part of a high-protein diet IMOs may assist in nutrient absorption and fat loss.
